Carnatal is the off-season carnival of the city of Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Held annually at the beginning of December, it is organized at the Arena das Dunas. It’s in the Guinness Book as the world’s biggest off-season carnival.

Carnatal began in 1991, when it was created what would be, 25 years ago, the largest carnival out of season in Brazil, held in the capital of Rio Grande do Norte.

From then on, Carnatal has added joy, happiness and entertainment to the people of Potiguar, who spend the year hoping to relive the liveliest days of the city.

Every year, the Carnatal comes full of news, after all, the capital of Potiguar has grown, appeared and became even more important as one of the venues of the 2014 World Cup. For this reason, the Carnatal is currently held around the Arena Das Dunas, the modern stadium of Natal.

During the Carnatal, Natal becomes the capital of Brazil and receives tourists from the four corners of the country. This means an increase in the economy of the state and, above all, the capital. During the party period, the hotel chain accounts for more than 90% of occupancy. Tourists and specialists consider Carnatal as the climax of domestic and international movements for the capital.

Carnatal Solidario

Every year, Carnatal focuses on helping those who need it through social responsibility actions that, in parallel to the event, help the community where it operates. This is how Carnatal and Destaque Promociones, a promoter of the event, provide palliatives and effective actions that stimulate human development, the main concern of the project, also helping to publicize the work of each institution associated with the campaigns.

In addition to Hemonorte, the institute responsible for blood banks in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Carnatal still contributes through Carnatal Solidario to the Charity Warehouse, the GACC (Children’s Cancer Support Group), Varela Santiago Children’s Hospital, , Campaign to Combat Child Labor, Campaign to Combat DST-AIDS and more recently in the campaign to stimulate Bone Marrow Donation.

Carnatal History

The first Carnatal happened in 1991 with only three blocks. The first Bahian artists to participate in the event were Cheiro de Amor, Netinho and Bamda Mel. There were only 12 cabins and there were no bleachers. The circuit was set up in the center of the city. With success, the micareta grew with each edition and the place where it was held was small.

In 1994, the circuit went to Largo do Machadão. The structure of the Nata micareta already counted on 525 cabins and 14 blocks, between officers, alternative and children. More than 50 thousand revelers danced axé music and frevo animated by Cheiro de Amor, Asa de Águia, Netinho, Ricardo Chaves, Chiclete with Banana, Banda Mel, Morais Moreira, Ricardo Chaves, Band Patrulha, UFO, Xodó and Pimenta Nativa.

Some years later, in 2001, the Carnatal changed. The micareta had time to finish due to a determination of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and, because of this, started earlier. This year, the stars of the party were Asa de Águia, Chiclete with Banana, Capilé, Gil, Netinho, Banda Beijo, Cheiro de Amor, Timbalada, N’Ativa Pepper, Samba Harmony, Jammil, Banda Di Maçã, Almir Rouche and Ricardo Keys. The news: Ivete Sangalo, Elba Ramalho, Patchanka, The Girls, It’s Tchan. And among the stars of music in Brazil, two local artists appeared in the Folia Corridor: Sueldo Soares and Lane Cardoso, revelatory singer of Carnatal 2001.

In Recent Years

The year 2004 served as a prelude to the commemoration of the 15 years of Carnatal, a super party that moved the city. In 2005 and 2006, Carnatal repeated the dose and brought to the avenue attractions, such as Ivete Sangalo, Bubblegum with Banana, Wing of Eagle, Smell of Love, Band Eva and New Babado.

Proving its prestige, in 2007, 2008 and 2009 Carnatal was the stage of great coverage on national television network. Several broadcasters have highlighted teams to do the coverage and broadcast live for the whole of Brazil. The brilliance, the organization, the beauty of the city and the contagious joy of the carnatal carnival broke the frontiers.

In 2011 the capital of Potiguar grew, appeared and became even more important as one of the venues of the 2014 World Cup. Natal planned its restructuring to host Arena das Dunas, the main stadium of the world championship, which was built in the space of the old Machadão, where for so many years the electric trios of the biggest party of the city circulated.

And how could it not be, the Carnatal happened, accompanying this stage of development so important for our state. The route gained new adaptations, the route was changed, but the party had the same joy. “The event also served as a pilot for the festivities held during the World Cup in Natal, following the model of the Cape Town Fan Walk in the 2010 World Cup,” said Roberto Bezerra, one of the directors of Destaque Promociones.
